This will probably be my last post to this BLOG. Haven’t heard from any of you after posting, so I assume you are not interested in getting MORE eMails and a silly BLOG from me.
Had a great time on Florida Safari from April 16 through Thursday April 22nd. Got 166 miles riding, worked three days painting the route after riding in the mornings, great food by caterer (Dixie Grill from Live Oak, FL), outstanding weather with cool mornings and warm days. But best of all seeing friends from Florida, Ohio, Washington and other states that I have made over the three years doing this event and helping George Cheney the ride director and club Exec Dir.
Then joined Ellen in St George Island along with Preston, Lynn and Emma. This island is unique. Very little commercial, one end of island is gated community, other end is state park and the middle is all residential. NO high rises. Sand on beach is pink from shell crushing, water is like most of Gulf a beautiful blue/green and clear. The beach front house had four bedrooms and two baths, small kitchen and combo living room/dining room. Had a screen porch across the width of the house on beach side, a deck along half of the morning sun side, shady in afternoon. It was really great to watch Emma, such a pretty and well behaved, happy baby!
I have signed up with Bubba’s Pampered Peddlers form BRAG Bubba furnishes a tent, reclining chair, air mattress and a fresh towel daily. Has the tent set up and waiting, has luggage in tent, a canopy up with cold refreshments daily. This will really be better than me finding my luggage on the ground that has been dropped by the two 18 wheelers carrying it daily along with 1500 bags. Lugging the stuff to a tent site and then putting up the tent When I am exhausted from riding 60 miles a day. Let alone taking the tent down and putting the bag back on the truck every morning. Will leave that to Bubba. Bubba is a retired policeman form St Louis, MO. Rode a recumbent from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, Ca by him self. Is a very BIG guy, wore tank shirt and track shorts (lime and green colors) while doing ride across country. Stopped at a Dairy Queen in Oklahoma, walked in his crazy attire and announced to all farmers at DQ that they sure dressed funny. The owner came out and said that he didn’t know who is was, but he can have anything he wants free. Bubba slept in Motel one night all way cross country, stayed at fire houses other nights. Would ride up and tell them he was riding bike cross country and didn’t have place to stay, they would ask him to stay at fire house and feed him that night. He is a real character!
Will be on Jekyll Island for my event Friday through Sunday nights, May 14-16. Will meet Ginger and two of her children in Savannah on Sunday, May 9, Mother’s Day as they take her out to dinner every year on MD. Hope each of you has a nice Mother’s Day (Susan, Cath and Ellen, that is)!
Will look forward to hearing Rick teach a class at the Westin on May 18th. Really like to see and know where you work. One of my great interest!
I (bicycleSAVANNAH) is sponsoring a hole in an Auburn Alumni Club Scholarship Golf Match at Crossroads Golf Course on May 25 (Rick’s Birthday). If any of you want to sponsor a hole ($125.00) contact Pat McIntosh at (912) 657-4354
BRAG is June 12-19, I will leave my car at Tybee, ride the BRAG bus to Toccoa, then ride my bike back to Tybee. It’s 423 miles this year.

Have now set up three Florida Trails Tours for 2005. One each in January, February and March. Will stay in Inverness three nights and Dunedin three nights, expand tour to five full days of riding, have guest arrive Sunday, depart Saturday. Crown Hotel has been sold, so we stay in only other nice property in Inverness (Central Motel) where I have stayed before and it’s okay for touring people. Best Western Yacht Harbor Inn will be a great place in Dunedin. Have eaten at the restaurant there on other tours where we rode Pinellas Trail, over looks yacht club and Clearwater Bay with blue/green water and big yachts.
From now until BRAG starts, I will have an event to attend or implement every weekend except two weekends! Weather will be warmer now and should be able to get 80 to 100 miles riding every week to prepare for BRAG. This year we start in Taccoa Falls and end at Tybee Island. Major hills first two days, rolling hills next two days, then flat terrain. Have bought rolling LARGE soft bag, as well as, new sandals for BRAG. Large rolling soft bag will help me loading the truck every morning, as well as, getting my gear to a camp site each day. The sandals replace the only other pair of sandals I can recall ever owning. The old pair (fisherman sandals) from K-Mart were always tough to walk any distance. I bought TEVA sandels for $40 on the internet and I can honestly say they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn when new. I will be able to take these and leave my cross training (tennis) shoes at home ... will save some luggage weight!
I am seriously considering trading my Taurus for a mini-van. The Taurus now has 109,000 miles. The mini van will be a big help on tours, as well as, picking up supplies for rides. I have found two vans at O. C. Welch used cars that have only 10,000 miles or less. One is $13,995 with 12,079 miles. I will have to have roof rack re-configured to attach to the existing roof top “bars”, but will give me more flexibility. Have a private tour coming last four days of April and they are bringing re-cumbants and have no way of transporting these types of bikes. Can put the Easy Sport inside a van and can put the other recumbant on the trunk rack. My current financing has allowed me to pay off ALL debts except home mortgage and that dropped $45 a month due to Homestead exemptions taking effect I applied for when buying this town house. I can afford a $300 monthly payment and still save $200 a month, if I figured my monthly bills correctly. With bicycleSAVANNAH, LLC getting $7,000.00 in title sponsors this year, it literally guarantees me to be able to pay myself a salary all this year. Whew! Was a narrow escape until that happened!
Next week I hope to finish all data needed to publish the Historic Savannah Bikefest flyer, web site, etc. Then I will be free to do other things until these events take place. I will be attempting to establish a Coastal Georgia Heritage Tour in April 2005 and a Fall Foliage Natchez Trace Tour in October 2005. With the fee I am charging for the Florida Trails Tour and IF I fill up 80%, I will make a profit of about $7,000.00 for the three tours. I charged a very low fee for this years tours and several of the attendees said I should charge more. Other tours of like benefits all charge over $1,000.00. I will charge $895 for January and $995 for February and March (higher hotel rates in season).
Let me hear from you!

The February Florida Trails Tour went very good. The attendees ate more, drank more, rode harder and had a better time than the January Group. Based on two tours, will change tour to six days, stay three nights in Inverness (Crown Hotel is closing, has been bought and will be turned into assisted living home, so will move to Central Motel) and then move to Clearwater and stay two nights. This will allow us to ride North end of Pinellas Trail and East-West Trails out of Clearwater. This change will allow more variety to the riding. Will increase price for extra day, as well as, increase price because it’s too low now.
Schedule for next two months looks like I will be attending four events and do the one event April 3 (Savannah Cardiology Earth Day Ride). Ginger hopefully will ride the Bandana Ride in Riedsville and the Another Bloomin’ Bike Ride in Metter. I will go alone to Dublin’s St Pat’s Ride March 21, as well as, Florida Safari April 17-22.
My finances have changed drastically with two title sponsors, as well as, doing some re-financing. I meet with Ted Austad and VP of Oglethorpe Speedway to get contract signed of intent to buy my events. If they come through at end of year and I sell my townhouse, I will be able to do tours only and survive. When that time comes, will sell Taurus and buy second hand mini van with maybe 30,000 miles. The van will be my tour car. Will have trailer made (like one owned by Charleston bicycle club) that will hold ten bikes and is so light it can be towed by a Volkswagon bug. When I do tour for ten people, will rent another van. That will provide very good transport to trails. Can also maybe increase maximum attendees to twelve with two bike racks on back of van.
Regarding my health, I have lost a few more pounds and my blood sugar is still coming down. I will ride more every week now that the weather is beginning to warm up.

Concerned about a lack of revenue income and being between seasons for events, I decided to do some re-financing to create cash enough to get two flyers printed and mailed to get the cash flowing. No sooner had I signed the papers three things happened. One, I got approval from Savannah Cardiology to be a $5,000.00 title sponsor for two Savannah events; two, SUNTRUST Bank came across for $2,500.00 to be a title sponsor for the Jekyll Island Ride; and, three. I got my taxes done and am getting back $1,100.00. An un-expected windfall of $8,600.00 I will get in the coming two months. I will put most of the re-finance money in savings, but it will allow me to pay off my car and my Sears account that had climbed due to car repairs I had to charge in the past six months, as well as, reduce monthly bill payments substantially. By paying off the car, I will be able to replace the Taurus in the event it “dies” from the 109,000 miles it has been run.
Valentine’s Day at Ginger’s turned out to be a real “doosey”. I became violently ill Saturday and threw up all day, ate nothing after breakfast and was feeling like I would have to get better to die. This is the third time since dating Ginger that I have had this type of illness. Thought it was the water, but have been using bottled water for some time there. May have been Ginger’s cooking, but she doesn’t get ill. My doctor said it could be sinus infection, but didn’t have sinus infection this time.
Have been approved by Veteran’s Administration for pharmacy service, which means I will be able to get most all prescriptions for $5.00 a month for each one. Waiting for an appointment with a VA Doctor for the once a year interview required to stay on the program and get started. This will allow me to take couple of prescriptions (Ambien and Prevacid) that I don’t take because I can’t afford them every month (The two would be $130.00 total monthly).
Will leave for Florida Trails Tour Sunday, Feb 22., return Friday night, Feb. 27. Had a call yesterday from woman in Canada who is considering joining the tour. If she and her friend join, it will give me eight people and another little profit to go with the windfall in first paragraph above.
As for my health, you would be pleased to know I have lost a little weight and blood sugar is coming down. Will start riding again as soon as this cold weather moderates. Hopefully I will get in 60 to 70 miles next week riding with the tour people when I don’t have to SAG. By the time BRAG comes around, maybe I will be back in shape!

Valentine’s Day for Ginger and I has changed. We have cancelled our trip to White Springs and the SBA’s annual Sweetheart Bicycle Ride weekend. Rain and cooler weather forecast led us to the decision to stay in Statesboro and go out to dinner at Longhorn Steak House.
BicycleSAVANNAH has taken a lot of my time lately as I try to launch sponsors, hotel accommodation, volunteers for this years events. Of note, is Russ Beasley of Lowcountry Velo who works with Ted Austad of Oglethorpe Speedway (people who want to buy my events) has recruited ten people to help with the Earth Day Ride. This is a good sign that they will be able to get people to implement the rides next year. Those people along with volunteers from the Coastal Bicycle Touring Club will allow the rides to continue. Still waiting for Savannah Cardiology to approve title sponsorship for Earth Day. They may decide to do Historic Savannah Bikefest instead.
I have tried to get back on Dr. Atkins Diet to lose some weight and get my blood sugar down. It’s down a little, but I need to eliminate more carbohydrates. Will concentrate on doing that in coming weeks, as well as, getting out and riding my bike more. The weather seems to be stopping the riding, but Spring will come soon, I hope!
Future trips and events include:
Florida Trails Tour, Inverness, 2/22-2/27
Assist Jerry Colley (BRAG) at Fort Stewart travel exhibition, March 16
Earth Day Ride, April 3
Florida Safari, 4/17-23
Private Tour in Savannah for Florida Couple, April 27-30
Jekyll Island Challenge and Sunset Ride, May 15-16

My rib problem is getting worse a little bit at a time by not letting me sleep at night. I had enough last night, woke at 1:30am, stayed up for a while, than slept for 30 minutes, then went to Effingham County Hospital at 4:00am, saw Doctor, got X-ray done. He says no fracture nor hairline cracks in ribs that hurt. But could be hairline fracture not showing on X-ray. Gave me Rx for Videcan (sp), and told me to do deep breathing exercise four times a day. To stay off bicycle for a while, too.
The developer is currently digging up my driveway to correct sewer problem I have had since moving in to townhouse. The line apparently has a low place between house and street. Water accumulates, then air bubbles back through downstairs toilet. The sewer line goes under my driveway, so they are digging it up to get to sewer line to take belly out and let it drain properly. No cost to me, developer extended home warranty and other things for another year.

On Monday, January 19th, I rode with the tour group that had arrived that morning to Floral City and back from Inverness. We had to sit out a rain shower while we had lunch at Shamrock Sport’s Bar in Floral City and after an hour were able to start riding back to Inverness. About half way back, Norma Jones stopped on the trail to put on another jacket for warmth, and by stopping ON the trail, caused others to slow down. I was in the rear, couldn’t stop completely, kissed the wheel of the rider in front of me, went down hard on the trail pavement.
The fall caused a strawberry on my arm and knee. It also caused a bruised rib that has gotten worse until I couldn’t sleep last night and I am up at 2:30am doing this BLOG up-date.
Today, I go to Savannah to Veteran’s Administration to see if I can qualify for prescriptions for $5 per month per prescription. Dr. Summers now has me on Glucotrol XL and has asked me to increase from one a day to THREE a day because my follow up physical blood work two weeks ago showed my blood sugar to be 266. It has been creeping up for a year, I haven’t exercise like I used to exercise and I have gained weight. He also has prescribed Prevacid, a thyroid medicine and Ambien to help sleep some time ago. I cannot afford all these prescriptions.
At 76, I am beginning to feel my age. The Florida Trails Tour took a lot out of me. I slept through the rib pain after the tour people departed last Friday for three hours that afternoon and about nine hours that night. I rode with them two days and I could only average about 10 miles an hour. It’s got to the point where I really don’t have as much enthusiasm as I did a few years ago to do four events and two or more tours a year, as it’s more than a full time job. It appears that I really need to sell bicycleSAVANNAH events at the end of this year and plan some way to reduce my workload and/or retire for good. Any suggestions you have will be appreciated.
I go to Brunswick Wednesday to meet with people about implementing the Jekyll Island Challenge Century and Sunset Ride on May 15-16, 2004. An advertising agency is attempting to get a title sponsor for this ride and they will have two people at this meeting. Also, Ted Austad (Oglethorpe Speedway GM) will go with me to meet those who help me on the ride. I have had my attorney prepare a contract of intent to buy with a non-compete agreement that he, Andy Stone (VP, Oglethorpe), and Russ Beasley (Low Country Velo) must sign before he goes with me. I do not plan to release proprietary information until that is signed. At the same time, it is important that they come across and buy these events from me. If the Brunswick people get a title sponsor and Savannah Cardiology comes across as I have proposed to them, it will increase the value of the events measurably.
I will be at Ginger’s this weekend. She has invited a couple friends to join us for a small Super Bowl party. I will be in Atlanta Friday, Feb 6 (BRAG Board of Directors Meeting Saturday) and return to Rincon, Sunday, Feb 8. Ginger and I go to White Springs Florida Feb 13-15 for Suwannee Bicycle Associations Annual Sweetheart Bicycle Ride. Then Feb 22, back to Florida for the Feb Florida Trails Tour. Meanwhile, I will need to complete Earth Day Flyer and Jekyll Flyer before Feb 22. Busy month!
